About Us

A New Thought Center for Spiritual Growth

We practice positive, practical spirituality! Based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, Unity of Dayton honors the diversity of all people. We are also committed to each individuals highest spiritual purposes. These include Universal Love, Peace, Prosperity, Service, and Oneness with God.

A Welcoming Spiritual Community

We are a joyous, flourishing, and welcoming spiritual community that enables divine expression, transformation, and spiritual understanding. We offer transformation of lives by meditating, praying, teaching truth, celebrating each other, and giving, too. That’s how we build community.

Unity of Dayton welcomes individuals of every ethnicity, language, age, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, economic status, occupation, and faith background into our spiritual community. In Unity, the LGBTQ+ community is embraced as a part of us. We recognize that everyone is equally loved by God because God is in each one of us. We honor all committed relationships and families and welcome anyone with a genuine desire for spiritual growth. Unity stands for inclusivity so all people may know their essential contribution to the whole of life. We have an active LGBTQ+ ministry and participate every year in the Dayton Pride festival.

Awesome Sundays

Join us in-person or online each Sunday for our Celebration Service, streamed on Facebook at 11 a.m.! Each Sunday, we offer a whole family environment with available childcare.

Truth Teachings

We frequently facilitate classes, workshops, and study groups. We continue to hold to the idea that Unity of Dayton is a teaching ministry where we can gather tools for practical Divinity in action. Some of the classes and workshops include: prayer, healing, prosperity, Unity basic principles, spiritual ideas, and many more exciting Truth Teachings.

Our History

Unity of Dayton began as Unity Center in downtown Dayton, Ohio on October 24, 1924.  It was open 6 days a week, excluding Saturdays, and run by Lida Disher.  She had formerly served at Silent Unity. Classes, healing services and Sunday services were offered. Over the years the name was changed to Unity Society of Christianity and relocated to several places in downtown Dayton.

In the late 1950s the center was without a minister and relied on speakers from Unity of Cincinnati. That affiliation and tradition has continued through the decades to today.

In 1960 the name was changed to Unity of Dayton. In 1962, Rev. Betty DeTurk began a 32-year tenure as our senior minister. During those years the location was moved to Huber Heights, a suburb a few miles northeast of Dayton. Almost 8 acres of land was purchased, and our current building was completed in 1986. Several short-term ministers served our congregation as well as two long term ministers, Rev. Lisa Davis, and Rev. Cindy White. Not only have ministers and licensed teachers from Unity ministries of Cincinnati provided Sunday services, we now have several Centers for Spiritual Living ministers and licensed practitioners bringing Sunday messages to us as well as licensed teachers from Unity of Columbus. Rev. Becky Whitehead is currently our Minister of Record and provides some in-person and Zoom Sunday services. We are blessed with so many qualified and diverse speakers as we prepare to welcome our next senior minister.
